Empowering Through the Lens: How Milou & Olin is Redefining Photography for Women
Interview by Heather Anderson
Caroline Winata, affectionately known as "Olin," has built Milou & Olin into more than just a photography studio—it’s a haven for women seeking empowerment, expression, and healing. With her multicultural roots and a deep passion for storytelling, Caroline brings a unique approach to photography, helping women embrace their authentic selves through every session. In this conversation, she opens up about the inspirations behind her studio, the philosophy that shapes her work, and her commitment to supporting women, including domestic violence survivors, on their journeys to confidence and freedom.
How did your journey in photography begin and lead to the vibrant studio you have today?
My journey started with an old Canon camera that belonged to my dad. I’ve been fascinated by photography since childhood—capturing moments and emotions felt like magic. Eventually, I realized I wanted to build a studio that didn’t just take photos but created experiences, celebrated stories, and, most importantly, empowered women.
Photography at Milou & Olin goes beyond capturing images. You have a strong focus on empowering women. Can you share more about this aspect of your work?
For me, photography is much more than just taking pictures. It’s a medium to help women see themselves in a new, powerful way. When I hold my camera, I aim not just to capture a moment but to reveal each woman’s unique beauty, strength, and essence. In a world that often defines us by external standards, I want each session to be a reminder that they are radiant and enough just as they are.
Your studio stands out for its unique atmosphere and creative approach. What's the experience like at Milou & Olin, and what makes it special?
Milou & Olin is a sanctuary where we celebrate women. From the boudoir sessions to our Image Reveal Room, every space is curated to ensure an extraordinary experience. We have a Client Closet for styling, a cozy makeup and hair studio, and a team that genuinely cares about creating memorable moments. We want every client to feel seen, pampered, and celebrated.
The dynamic at Milou & Olin seems wonderfully collaborative. Could you tell us about the team spirit and its significance in your work?
Our team is the heartbeat of Milou & Olin. I believe in creating a supportive, communal environment where we can all inspire each other. My studio manager, social media coordinator, and editor each bring something unique, making us stronger as a whole. We’re all here to make every woman who walks in feel like the best version of herself.
Your love for capturing random light and obscure moments is evident. What's your creative process, and where do you find your inspiration?
My process is intuitive. I’m inspired by the interplay of light and shadow, those overlooked moments that tell real, raw stories. Inspiration can strike in the smallest things, like the way sunlight filters through a window or a spontaneous laugh. These little, genuine moments hold the most truth, and I aim to capture that essence.
Your work extends into the realm of supporting domestic violence survivors. Can you talk about how you use your sessions to empower women recovering from abuse and trauma?
I’ve been through my own challenges, and I know how transformative it can be to feel seen, heard, and beautiful. In our sessions, we create a safe space for women to be vulnerable and embrace their journeys. Many of our clients have faced difficult situations, and photography can be healing for them. I’m currently taking a trauma-informed care course so we can provide even better support.
You’re also involved in providing transitional housing for DV survivors. Can you share more about this initiative and its impact?
Yes! One of my dreams is to provide transitional housing for women who are leaving abusive situations. There’s such a gap between emergency shelters and finding stable housing, especially for women who may have faced financial abuse. I want to give them a safe, supportive community to heal and start rebuilding.
Among the many moments you've captured, is there one that stands out as particularly memorable or impactful for you?
One session that truly stands out involved a woman who had recently left an abusive relationship. She arrived feeling vulnerable and unsure, but as the session progressed, I could see her transformation. By the end, she was laughing, radiating confidence, and seeing herself in a new light. Each session became another step in her journey to reclaim her strength and identity. Moments like these remind me why we do this work—creating a safe, empowering space where women can reconnect with their beauty and power.
“Many of our clients have faced difficult situations, and photography can be healing for them.”
That’s incredibly powerful—and it sounds like this story didn’t end there. I heard she became a part of your team?
Yes, she did! This client-turned-team member, Ellie, now manages bookings and connects with new clients daily. Her story and presence add so much heart to our studio. She often shares her own experience with our clients, which helps them feel comfortable and understood, knowing they’re not alone. Seeing her step into this role has been a beautiful full-circle moment, perfectly embodying our mission at Milou & Olin.
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals for Milou & Olin? Any new directions or projects you’re excited about?
I want Milou & Olin to continue evolving as a community-driven studio. We’re also exploring ways to use our space and platform to collaborate with organizations like WEAVE to support more women. There’s so much potential to create meaningful change, and I’m excited to see where that takes us.
Finally, for anyone interested in booking a session or exploring a collaboration, what’s the best way to connect with Milou & Olin?
The best way is through our website milouandolin.com. We’d love to connect, whether for personal photography or creative collaborations. There’s always room for more stories, and we’re here to make every session unforgettable.
